A former automobile dealership on 14 acres of prime North Dallas real estate with 7 large steel and concrete buildings totaling 118000 sq feet. It was last valued at over $25 million for tax purposes. The estimated 2008 property taxes alone exceeded $625000. This property is adjacent to some of the most expensive retail and mixed residential/commercial real estate in Dallas.

This location was originally Doran Chevrolet, one of the largest Chevy dealers in Dallas. In the late 1980s they sold out or changed their name to become Showcase Cheverolet. It was all downhill after that. I think that the accessibility issues caused by the Dallas North Tollway, the service roads and exit ramps, and the Galleria traffic, this location became less than favorable for doing car business in fact, it was pretty difficult to get to if you didn't know which exit to take in advance. In spite of being visible to 10s of thousands of motorists each day they probably couldn't draw enough customers to keep the doors open. Plus the value of the land probably exceeded the net worth of the business at some point! Its not uncommon for automobile dealers to squeeze out some of their competition. I dont know if that is what happened here but Bankston Chevrolet just opened a new Chevy dealership a few blocks west of here. That couldn't happen with a Chevrolet franchise unless GM approved it and Showcase agreed to close. This large property was purchased by an investment company in 2007 and has been vacant and getting vandalized and stripped of all its copper and aluminum since then. UPDATE JUNE 2009: temporary perimeter security fencing and boarding up now in effect
