     History
Formerly a colony of Spain, Germany, and Japan, Saipan is now part of the semi-autonomous Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Garapan is the capitol of CNMI. Excluding Japan, there is little left in Garapan from the occupation of previous empires. There are many Japanese buildings, however. From 1914-1944 Japan utilized Saipan as a major source of sugar cane. Sugar cane production and refining dominated Saipan and 22,000 Japanese as well as Korean and Okinawan colonists moved to Saipan, far outnumbering the 4,000 native Chamorro and Carolinean people. Japan built many buildings and infrastructure to support its people, sugar industry, and finally growing military presence. In June of 1944, the U.S. invaded Saipan but, unlike subsequent amphibious opperations, did not totally destroy Garapan in the preinvasion bombardment. As a consequence, the Japanese utilized every building as a fort and there was a significant and bloody urban battle on the streets of Garapan. But, unlike Guam and Tinian, there are still many Japanese buildings that remain.
