While parts of the hospital were abandoned in the seventies the entire location was recently closed in 2009. Tunnels connect the older buildings which offer a great amount to see both in structure and contents.

Westborough Insane Hospital was established in 1884 and made use of the campus built in 1847 that housed the State Reform School for Boys which had relocated across the lake and became the Lyman School for Boys (closed in 1971). The campus was constructed on farmland sold to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts by Lovett Peters. Various new buildings were added nearby to the old main building over the late 1800s and into the second half of the 1900s. In 2010, two years ahead of schedule, Westborough State Hospital was closed with the new Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital (replacement of Worcester State Hospital) to be opened in 2012. Preparations for the demolition of the campus began in 2018 and are expected to come to fruition in a short amount of time.

The campus will be demolished as part of a mixed-use site.
