The house is filled with all manner of semi-burnt books and clothes, and the garage is a treasure-trove of newspapers from the 80s and early 90s.

Yourself and some daylight.
Built during the 1980s with its own private road, it was the home of Mr. Wayne Karmgaard and his partner, Pierre. Mr. Karmgaard came to the Hyde Park/Rhinebeck area from Tivoli; he and his partner (both domestic and business) had in mind to purchase most of the businesses in Rhinebeck and Tivoli, turning them into (their words): "The East Bank's Gay Woodstock." The success (or lack thereof) of that plan is visible by the fact that today most of the shops in Rhinebeck are still independently owned small businesses.
Skipping ahead to 1991, shortly after his partner has left him, Mr. Karmgaard discovers that he is HIV positive. A few months later, in 1992, lacking the money to pay for treatment (and at the time, HIV diagnoses may as well have been death sentences), Mr. Karmgaard places his home, Shagabak Manor, in trust and takes out a massive insurance policy. A few days later, his house catches fire, but little damage is done. Oddly, two more fires occur in the subsequent two months, the third of which finally ruined a good section of the house. The insurance company, of course, believes the fires to have been intentionally set, coming as a trio on the haunches of a huge policy being taken out, but they are nonetheless forced to settle with Karmgaard for $800,000.00 after a Dutchess County court decision. Following this, Karmgaard simply disappears, leaving his abandoned home to rot next to one of the most popular tourist attractions and parks in Hyde Park: The Vanderbilt Mansion. In fact, from the window of the second floor, you can watch people at the nearby Vanderbilt Park walking past, oblivious to its existence.
I think the state plans to just let it slowly rot and collapse further.
