Opened in 1926 under the name Kyungsung Stadium, Dongdaemoon Stadium has survived Japanese tyranny, World War II, and the Korean War.
The stadium was the location for mass celebrations of the end of Japanese colonial rule, as almost 250,000 citizens gathered at the venue on August 15th, 1945, to celebrate the liberation.
The stadium remained the main center for sports events in Seoul until the Seoul Sports Complex was built for the 1988 Olympic Games. The last the last international match was played there against Myanmar in 2000.
Since then the athletics stadium has been used as a flea market where all types of both new and second-hand goods are sold.
On April 16, 2008, at 4am, the stadium was raided by a gang of 500 hired goons paid by the city, who beat the vendors and evicted them from the stadium.
