 Interesting Features
Scotland's longest river follows mature woodland northwards for about 3km. On the way you pass Niel Gow's Oak, where the well-known local fiddle player composed many of his tunes. The path leaves the river and, after passing beneath the A9 and a railway line, climbs steeply for a short distance into Craigvinean Forest, a woodland of enormous Douglas firs. The track descends to the Hermitage, an ornamental woodland garden dating from the 1750s, where you will find a Hermit's Cave and Ossian's Hall, providing a viewpoint over the Falls of Braan.

"An unusual if short-lived and not extensive fad arose in eighteenth-century England. Men of eccentric bent and material substance took up the practice of installing on the grounds of their estates an "ornamental hermit." An ornamental hermit was not a real hermit, as the name suggests. An ornamental hermit was a man employed by the estate-owner to reside in a contrived hermitage for a period of time and make scheduled appearances on the grounds to the pleasure of the employer and to be seen and marveled at by guests."

Also, towards the end of the walk there is a plaque that marks Britain's tallest tree. The 64.6m Douglas fir was planted in the 1860s and is a joy to behold, oh yes.

     History
If you don’t believe in trolls and faeries, you may change your mind after visiting The Hermitage. Originally the 2nd Duke of Atholl’s favorite self-made forest glen (as history tells it, he piled hundreds of seedlings into a cannon and shot them out over the valley to get that ‘natural’ look) the Hermitage was used as a relaxing destination for opium-eating geniuses, including the likes of Williams Blake and Wordsworth, along with other recognizable poets and artists.

The glen hides Ossian’s cave, boasts the biggest living tree in the UK, and the entire park owns a misty, magical atmosphere: trees are clothed in dense green moss, snowdrops grow in abundance and, interrupting the River Braan, an impressive waterfall roars over a series of boulder.

*What was believed until recently to be the tallest tree in the UK stands in these woods. Then someone got round to measuring it and it lost its title to a tree in Moniack near Inverness.
