Whats left after the last fire are a few brick and concrete structures with water flowing beneath the main building. A one lane bridge crosses the river nearby.

Part of the main remaining building is sealed off and the low hum of electricity can be heard from inside. An old wooden bridge sits over a small creek just next to the decommissioned Bynum bridge. Bynum dam is located upstream just passed the new 15-501 bridge.

In 1779, Luke Bynum bought land upon which to build a gristmill and covered bridge. In 1872, the Bynum Manufacturing Co built a textile mill for weaving cotton cloth, while continuing to run the gristmill. The commonly accepted territory of Bynum includes the area immediately off of Bynum Road. The town grew up around the mill, which was set on the Haw River. Originally, the company built 14 cotton mill houses available for rent to its employees. As the mill grew, the town grew and became a vibrant community. In the 1930’s there were five stores, a movie theater, and a high school in Bynum. The mill burned down in 1916, but was soon rebuilt. In 1922, electricity was installed and 29 more mill houses built (total of about 40 houses for workers). The textile mill was alternately operated under the name Odell Manufacturing Company. The mill closed operations in 1986. An additional fire occurred around 2000 leaving only a few remaining buildings. The old Bynum bridge was built in 1923 and closed to traffic in 1999. The one lane bridge is only open to foot traffic now and the new 15-501 bridge (1000 ft upstream) completely bypasses the small town now leaving a mostly dead neighborhood except for a few remaining locals.

It will continue to be taken over by nature. Carolina Power & Light has some sort of activity within one of the buildings.
