 Overview
 Description
And old mine shaft well-hidden in the middle of a forest, in the bottom of an old open pit. The buildings next to the mine were demolished some ten years ago, and only remaining structure in addition to the shaft is a concrete platform in the edge of the quarry and some bricks remaining from the buildings that once stood there. Parts of the forest above the tunnels are fenced because of danger of collapsing.

     History
When talking about limestone quarrying in Särkisalo, people usually mention only the large, still operating limestone mine of Karl Forsström Oy in Förby. Not many know about the closed smaller mines, Kaukosalo, Pettu and Niksaari. Though the latter ones were only small open quarries that nowadays resemble artificial lakes, there was a real, albeit small, underground mine in Kaukosalo.

Though people had known about the limestone deposit in Kaukosalo for centuries, and quarried it from open pits, the actual mining began in 1927 by J.G. Glantz, when his company bought a petroleum-propelled mine winch and opened an underground mine. A.E. Nikander bought the mine with the limestone brick factory of Tvärminne in 1934 and continued mining until 1939. The mine was re-opened after the war in 1948, and limestone was quarried for some ten years, though only occasionally. Karl Forsström Oy bought the deposit in 1960, but never continued mining. The old shaft, 64 meters deep, slowly got filled with water.
