For over 70 years the factory on this site received produce from the surrounding agricultural area of north Norfolk and packed it in cans ready for sale nationwide. Over the years the cannery changed hands several times and the company operating the factory went by different names (these include HP Canning and HL Foods). It was one of the largest employers in the area until its closure in 2002. It was demolished in 2009-10. The factory was a major provider of vacation work for students. I have been told that in the 1960s the factory employed students as forklift truck drivers. Much to the delight of the students, the factory favoured an unusual type of forklift truck on which the rear wheels could be rotated through 90 degrees. And so, amongst the student drivers, a favourite method of stopping the forklift truck was to quickly rotate the wheels to the 90 degree position. The area of the site is 12 acres, although not all of this is covered by buildings. Most of the buildings date from the 1930s or 1950s. Some of the arrangements of corridors and staircases are plain weird. I spent half an hour finding my way onto one floor of the office block which is bypassed by the main staircase. There isn't a great deal of machinery left. Most of the machinery appears to have been stripped from the factory at the time of closure. But there are still a few interesting pieces: most notably the boilers, some large pressure vessels and some kind of washing machine with a large conveyor passing through it. Unfortunately I don't have photographs of all these machines because my camera memory card failed. Access to the site is moderately hard. If you want to know how to enter and exit the site, send me (inventor) a private message. If you're planning an exploration, it would be best to go soon as the factory will be demolished if planning permission for a new housing development is granted. There are already demolition company boards on the main gates.
