The winery was built in 1872 and then added onto in 1880 by Jacob Rush. It was capable of storing 40,000 gallons of wine, part of which was used for grape brandy every year. Monarch made Catawba, Delaware, Riesling, Elvira, Norton, Ives, Concord, Sherry, Port, and altar wines, using grapes pulled from the 150 surrounding acres. The winery closed temporarily during Prohibition, but reopened afterwards until 1950. During Prohibition, they made unfermented grape juice.
