     History
Designed by famous Glasgow architect David Hamilton and completed in 1841, Lennox Castle was originally a stately home for the Kincaid-Lennox family. In 1927 the castle and 1,222 acres of surrounding estate was purchased by Glasgow City, who planned to convert the site for institutional use.

Construction of a new psychiatric hospital would commence in 1929, named Lennox Castle Certified Institute for Mental Defectives (later renamed Lennox Castle Hospital) it officially opened on September 24th 1936.

The hospital consisted of 20 individual wards scattered around the site creating a 'self-contained village' with a capacity of 1,200 but would later go on to house 1,620 at its peak in 1970. The castle itself was used as accommodation for live-in staff and would later incorporate an overflow maternity section.

From the early 90's the hospital underwent a phased closure, most residents were re-housed in local communities. The last wards were closed in June 2002. By 2004 most of the wards had been demolished. Now only the castle itself remains, which was out of use by 1987.

In 2006 construction began of a new training complex for Celtic Football Club on the former site of the old hospital, also a new housing development is taking shape on the lower part of the site. Meanwhile, the solemn silhouette of Lennox Castle looms at the top of the hill, long forgotten and crumbling
