Belfry was an outpost for forest rangers watching out for forest fires. At the top of this mountain was a fire tower and ranger cabin looking in at the eastern foothills of the Adirondacks. The firetowers were a common sight until the late 1960s, early 1970s when, one by one, they began to disappear. Currently, there are only a few left in the Adirondacks. Just before the tower, New York State and Essex County Emergency Management maintain a transmitter site for radio traffic. Currently, this ancient radio equipment has come under scrutiny due to the fact that it is so far out of date. No one wants to pay to replace the equipment out of their budgets, so the county makes due with the equipment.
