  •  Interesting Features
The Plant of Jars is one of the most important historic and cultural treasures in Laos, if not the most important. Walking around the sites is a great way to spend a day.

There's also a lot of smaller interesting things to be seen. A destroyed Russian tank, ruined buildings, local life, great scenery...

     History
Phonsavan was built in the mid 1970s after the old capital of Xieng Khouang was more or less completely destroyed during the fighting between the Pathet Lao and American backed anti-communist troops. Therefore the ruins in Xieng Khouang predate that.

The Plant of Jars, however, is much older. The jars were used by an ancient Mon-Khmer race 1500-2000 years ago. Little is known about them and the people who built them. Anthropologists and archeologists have theorized that the jars may have been used as funeral urns or perhaps storage for food.

     Future Plans
It's pretty certain that the sites will remain as they are for a long time. Even though Phonsavan is not "off the beaten track", as a small, dusty town far away from everything it's not a tourist attraction.
