Some of the stores still contain freezers, fixtures, cash register stations (no registers) and other goodies. Decay has set in fairly heavily, and makes for some interesting scenes.  Security Measures wooden boarding no trespassing signs!  Historical Dates Built: 1971 Closed: 1996  Required Equipment flashlight  Recommended Equipment  History This strip mall was opened in 1971 and had two major anchor stores, two grocery stores and a drug store. The major influences around the closing of this plaza included competition from other retailers, the need to expand to larger locations, and the loss of customer traffic in the 1990's due to a weak Canadian dollar and the decline of cross-border shopping. Looking at the mall from Highway 37, the stores were as follows from left to right (or west to east): 1. Kmart. Originally a Grant's department store, Kmart took over in 1976. As profits eroded in the late 80's Kmart decided to open a larger store down the road in response to the spread of other large stores such as Walmart. This was the first store at Park Plaza to close on Nov 19th, 1990. 2. Jubilee Foods IGA. Began life as Acme Market, then became Chicago Market and later Super Duper before becoming Jubilee Foods. This was one of the last stores to close in 1996. 3. Fay's Drug Store. One of the original stores in the Plaza, it closed in 1991 just after Kmart left. 4. Great American (supermarket). Closed in 1992 after Kmart and Fay’s bailed. 5. Ames. Originally a Zayre's, Ames bought out the chain sometime in the 80's. The Ames chain went into financial difficulty in the mid 90's mainly due to competition from stores like Walmart and bad takeover decisions, especially the Hills purchase.
