     History
Built in 1888 as Cushnoc Pulp and Paper (producing 9 tons of manila stock per day in 1894). At some point between 1901 and 1931 the name changed to Kennebec Pulp and Paper Co. outputting 140 tons of newsprint per day, then changing to Hudson Pulp and Paper (1935-1967) before Statler Tissue took over from 1967-1995. Due to the rising costs of waste paper, Statler began shutting down in January 1995, and all 550 workers were laid off and the company declared bankruptcy by March of that year. The plant was purchased by Tree Free Fiber LLC and operated in a limited capacity before closing in November 1997. The plant was idle until it was purchased by American Tissue in 2001, though it appears the plant operated only briefly and the company filed for bankruptcy in early 2003.

Currently, the site is undergoing an EPA/Superfund cleanup following the May 2006 fire, and security is now in place. It was apparently in place in November 2006 when I was last there, but I saw no sign of any activity on the site.

Update: Demolition started Summer of 2009 and was completed in August. The site will be turned into a park.

     Future Plans
The city of Augusta is seizing a former paper mill along the banks of the Kennebec River and plans to demolish it.

The city took ownership of the former Statler mill Tuesday, April 28, 2009 as a tax foreclosure process ended. The owners, Augusta Tissue LLC, owe the city about $650,000 in unpaid taxes and interest.

Augusta is hiring a Massachusetts company, Costello Dismantling of Middleborough, to demolish the building at little cost to the city. Costello gets salvage rights to the building.

Before the mill comes down, the city is inviting former workers to have a last look at the site of the longtime local employer. The mill closed in 2001.
