     Interesting Features
Not many features are left to remind one of the former Opera - foremost of which is the missing second floor. Ground floor is arranged into a typical bar / dance floor setting. The choice of colours is engaging. From the basement, one may see what 110-year old foundations look like. The basement was home to Miss Cali's Dungeon for the S&M crowd.

Rescue Mediums Jackie and Christine (TV Show - www.rescuemediums.com) recently filmed an episode at this supposedly HAUNTED building on Thursday September 21, 2006.

     History
Barrie's Grand Opera House was financed by Sydney James Sanford, entrepreneur and Simcoe County Treasurer in 1896.

Soon after the completion of the Grand Opera House the County was short of two items: Mr. Sanford (missing), and $62,857.02 (also missing) from public accounts.

Apparently Mr. Sanford, on the lam from Johnny Law, fled to South America where he built a fortune from mining investments and eventually paid off his debts in full.

The very first silent movie to be shown in Barrie was presented at the Grand Opera House in 1905. The Grand Opera House soon offered nightly showings at five cents for children and 10 cents for adults.

Fire claimed the second storey of this beautiful building and the property phased through to decline and several owners.

It was lastly Club C'est La Vie, Barrie's only alternative-lifestyle club. The City handed the owner an expropriation notice March 30, 2006. Some people rumour that the mayor (somewhat conservative and also an owner of several nearby bars) won't be sad to see any competition leave.
     Media Coverage
Not much coverage - with the exception of City of Barrie Council Meeting minutes. Some notes on gay-freindly club sites.

     Future Plans
The owner of the building and C'est La Vie, Carl Hauck, received an expropriation notice March 30, 2006 from the City of Barrie.

Collier Street Development Corporation (Parallax Investment Group) is planning a $6.8-million parking garage, which will feature 30,000 square feet of prestige office space.
