A large mine complex including headframes, conveyors, various process buildings, and a renovated powerhouse serving as a museum of mining equipment and mineral museum. The museum alone is worth the drive from St. Louis if you're interested in such things, but the rest of the complex is left as it was. You can walk between the buildings, but a yellow rope designates the path you are to stay on. Really, there's not much security here, but we didn't bother to test what security there was by leaving the path. Maybe another time. The complex is within the boundries of St. Joe State Park, a park on old mining terrian setup for off-roading.

This is the old St. Joseph Lead Co. facility in Park Hills Missouri. Southern Missouri is home to the largest lead reserves anywhere in the world, and this becomes obvious as one drives around the region noting town names such as "Old Mines", "Leadington", and "Leadville". According to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources website, "Serious small-scale mining for lead began in Southeast Missouri about 1720. A large demand for lead in the late 19th century brought major corporate enterprises to the Old Lead Belt. More than 1,000 miles of abandoned multilevel mine tunnels, with 300 miles of underground mainline railroad tracks are testimony to 108 years of persistent mining operations in this area." The building were donated to the DNR in 1975.
