     History
The Frank R. Phillips Power Station quietly stands tall and authoritative on the south bank of the Ohio River in the town of South Heights, PA. The Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad runs parallel to this property through Crescent Township. The coal-fueled power station, once operated by Duquense Light and Orion Power Midwest, served electricity to the Pittsburgh region since 1942.

The power house is an eleven story labyrinth of half floors and access stairways looping around the main furnace. The constant drone of stored electricity resonates in your ears as you try to determine the source. Random lights have been left on in hallways, work spaces, bathrooms, and around machinery in the long forgotten corners all around. In the control room, display panels are still illuminated as if the power operations never ceased. The grated floors allow you to peak into the abyss of multiple levels above and below you. The damp and foggy basement levels chill your skin. The multiple rooftop access points allow you to peer over to the neighboring community of Ambridge on the other side of the Ohio River.

Update 1/1/2011 The plant has been sold to a developer and is currently being demolished :( A very sad sight for a few of us.... There are over 50 workers on site, every day, full 24 hour security now, and cameras everywhere. Its all over for this great lady.. AS of 1/1/2011, they have demolished the conveyor from the coal yard, half of the scrubber, the crusher house, and are tenting the boiler area for asbestos removal and demo .
