 Overview
 Description
The steam power plant of Hanasaari in the heart of Helsinki, the capital of Finland, consists of two separate plant buildings, A and B, both housing two boilers and two turbine generators. The plant was built in several phases over two decades according to the energy demand of the city.

Hanasaari A was able to produce 550 tons of steam per hour with its two boilers. The steam was used to produce electricity and district heating with two AEG hydrogen-cooled turbogenerators, 80 and 100 megawatts respectively. Coal burned in the boiler was brought from Russia and Poland by ships and stored in a 400 000-ton storage area outside the plant.

For seven years the plant was in suspended animation, offline, waiting for either a crisis when its capacity would be needed, or demolition, which began in 2007. The Hanasaari area, along with the neighbouring harbour, will be turned into a new residental district of Helsinki.

The building was demolished in 2008.

     History
Construction of the first building, 160 000-cubic-meter Hanasaari A, started in 1957. It was designed to house two generator units. Installation of the first unit started in 1958 and it was taken into use two years later. In 1966 both units were operational. The adjanced coal harbour was built in two phases, in 1961 and 1964. Building of the second building, Hanasaari B, began in 1971, and in 1977 both plants and all four generator units were in use, producing 407 megawatts of electricity and 503 megawatts of district heating.

In 2000 now out-of-date Hanasaari A was taken off the power grid and turned into long-term backup plant that could be activated in three months in case of emergency. However, in 2006 it was no longer deemed necessary, and the old plant, still fully operational but not as environmentally friendly as modern plants, was scheduled for demolition in 2008.

When the plant was mothballed, it was used as a TV set for a Finnish TV show Ennätystehdas. Various music videos, such as "One MC One Delay" by Don Johnson Big Band and "Alasin" by Ruoska were also filmed in the building.
