The original location of the R.C. German Orphan Asylum was established in Buffalo to care for orphans and victims of the 1851 cholera epidemic. However, this location proved to be unsuited for a home for children needing fresh air and a safe place to play. In 1873, a Constitution was drawn up and adopted and nine parishes united in order to provide a suitable home for the dependent children. Early in 1874, through the efforts of the Reverend Elias Schauer, then rector of St. Mary's Church, the site of an old burying ground on Dodge Street was purchased at a cost of $25,000. On June 1, 1875, the present orphan Home was formally opened. The management of the new home was transferred to the Sisters of St. Francis. On Ash Wednesday, March 5, 1919, the institution was razed by a devastating fire. However, Within six months the institution was completely rebuilt. During the rebuilding process many improvements were added. On July 11, 1927 the cornerstone was laid for a new school on the property. The school contained the eight preliminary grades, besides the kindergarten and ungraded class. By December 23, 1938, a new chapel was added to the grounds and named the Sacred Heart Chapel. A disastorous fire in January 1956 was the beginning of the end of the German Roman Catholic Orphan Home - a home for more than 15,000 children during its lifetime. Though the orphanage closed, the building was still used for educational purposes, as indicated by items found. The year closed date is a guesstimate. --- I spoke with several former residents of the GRCO. The fire ws in the winter of 1956, and afterwards it was briefly used again by the GRCO until summer 1956 before being closed for good. Additionally, one resident told me: "The section between the two dorms, the Admin Offices also houses workers dining room, some of the refectories (dining rooms) the Nurses station, the Main kitchen, the Chaplain's quarters, some of the Sister's quarters and a connecting link between the two dorms. They had just put new fire doors at both ends of the Admin Offices section and year or so before the fire on all three floors and those are what kept the entire building from going up in flames. Just about the entire Admin Office section (and the floors above it) were about totally destroyed and they eventually made a one-story building connecting both dorms (as it now looks today). To my knowledge, the Dodge Street dorms may have been used as dorms for the seminarian students but the school was no longer used for classrooms by the residents of the home after the summer of 1956. However, the day care center and the Diocesan Preparatory Seminary may have used the school building for one purpose or another." - yokes
