     History
This land on which this Poorhouse or "County Home" sits was originally purchased from Adam Bernheisel, of Tyrone Township, in April, 1810. The first building was destroyed by fire and the present one was built in 1871 by Samuel Shuman. Originally located in Cumberland County, Perry County's formation in 1820, resulted in the Poor House now being in a "new" county. Ownership of the property was transferred to Perry County. Cumberland County came to an agreement that residents belonging to Cumberland County would be able to remain there for several years.

The Kitchen Building is separate from the approximately 70 room residence. A farm was located on site and those residents capable of working shared in household and farm duties. The last census (conducted every 10 years) occured in 1900 and the County Home did not have a listing in the 1910 census. The last known steward listing for the location was in 1914, meaning closure probably occured within that timeframe.

The building still stands and is believed to be in private hands. A knick-knack type business was recently run out of the old kitchen area and the Poorhouse was used for storage. A graveyard is also located onsite.

     Future Plans
    Currently in private ownership.

JULY 2008 NOTE: This property will soon be demolished. Workers are currently gutting it in preparation. I spoke with the next-door neighbor who lives almost on the property. He indicated that it was to be demolished this summer. He gave me the go ahead to take some pictures. It is his son who has the autobody business behind this building.
