 Overview
 Description
Moderate sized, abandoned wind turbine on top a small hill. It is completely accessible, with no security measures. The main door is missing and the control equipment inside destroyed. The ladder to the top is in place and in excellent shape, but covered with grease and there is no light while climbing. The larger pieces of equipment like the generator are still in place at the top. There is no apparent animal or bird infestation.

     History
    From "Windmills of Barbados":

    At Lamberts, on the St Lucy/St Peter boundary, a wind turbine remains, in an essentially abandoned state. The tower is showing signs of rust, and the door to the tower has been forced open, and the insides trashed. The turbine blades remain, in a "parked" position.

    These additional details come from Wind Energy System in the Caribbean - a document which is undated, but would appear to have been scanned from a paper published in 1989.

    Funding: InterAmerican Development Bank; Government of Barbados
    Supplier: James Howden and Co Ltd, Glasgow, Scotland
    Erected: April 1986; synchronized to electricity grid - 6th May 1986
    Rated: 250kW in a windspeed of 13.5 m/s

    Originally fitted with 26m blades, these were removed in Oct 1986, and replaced with 28m blades in Oct 1987 - recommissioning date 23rd October.

    Problems encountered (many linked to inadequate local maintenance) included:
    * flashover of the generator
    * difficulties with the machine control programme
    * sensor problem
    * yaw brakes rusting due to salty climate and predominantly unidirectional winds, then grabbing when applied which tripped the shaft vibration sensor

    Between Nov 1987 and Jan 1989 there were 3 months when no output was produced due to the yaw break problem, but when working, month outputs of 20 - 60 mWh were produced.

     Future Plans
    The Government of Barbados reportedly has plans for another pilot test with a half dozen larger wind turbines at the same location. If that happens, then this one will probably be removed.
