     History
The 7,000 plus acre site (also known as Asarco Lake) was operated by American Smelting and Refining Company between the 1960s and 1982. The company mined sections of the area for ilmenite sands rich in titanium oxide, which was used as a pigment in white paint.

The property was sold to Hovsons Inc. and Homeland Corp. in 1984. The company has sought permits to build Heritage Village, a planned community of houses, apartments, town houses and commercial buildings.

     Future Plans
Plans were to turn the whole area into condo's, but the DEP took much of the land and added it back to the Pine Barrens, even though the lakes and surrounding area's are highly contaminated.
