  •  Interesting Features
It's only a few feet from a very high traffic road, but there is virtually no pedestrian traffic in that area, so it has become one of those places that is right there under everyone's nose, but they just don't even know it's there.

The end of the bridge just drops off about 100 feet, and the only barricade is orange plastic.

     History
The Bankhead Highway Bridge, now known as “The Bridge to Nowhere” was built in 1912 and served roughly 4000 cars a day. At the time, the Bankhead Highway was the major western route out of Atlanta, before I-20 was built. The bridge was forced into closing in 1991 due to its lack of structural integrity. After failing to receive funding from Atlanta’s $94 million bridge restoration bill the bridge fell into disrepair. In the late 90’s the east half of the bridge, leading to Marietta St., was torn down and replaced with a parking lot, creating “The Bridge to Nowhere.”

     Future Plans
Some of the surrounding area is undergoing development. There is currently a plan for the bridge to be leased and maintained by one of the developers, who has plans to make it the future site of a top-name restaurant.
