Molten iron snaked its way through troughs and runners and the lights of a thousand fires burnt at night at the Duisburg Meiderich mill where blast furnaces were in operation 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. Ore yielded the raw material without which modern life would be unthinkable.
37 million tons of iron were produced over more than 80 years from 1903 to 1985 when the blast furnaces were tapped for the last time. History did not end, though, and a new beginning was made. The mill metamorphosed into a unique park scenery known by the name of Landschaftspark Duisburg-Nord.
New life sprung up in the old mill. Structural change worked at its best. Recreation has since fascinated visitors at a site where hard work has left its marks. Flowers now decorate an old industrial monument. People explore the history of Germany’s former iron and steel region, enjoy fun and games and discover nature. Duisburg has a new iron in the fire.
