A large number of huge brick factory complexes, ranging in height from one story to six, with a large historic brick smokestack. Buildings range in condition from partially collapsed to safe and stable. Some of the buildings appear to be very old, along with several newer buildings installed and abandoned within the last few years. There are numerous abandoned vehicles on site, a partially collapsed and overgrown railroad bridge, as well as the oldest railroad tracks in Iowa. The area sits on huge stretches of concrete littered with debris, and surrounded in some areas by fencing and cement barricades to prevent vehicle entrance. In some areas the fencing has collapsed or has been removed. Much of the underground areas of the complex appears to have been flooded.

This is a gigantic complex, with at least 20 distinct buildings and 3 different factories on the lot. The buildings range in age from the 1870's to the 1990's. There are large warehouses, truck loading areas, basement areas, an absurdly large amount of machinery, forklifts, abandoned vehicles (including a semi trailer), office areas, and more. The area is littered with debris from the flooding of 2008. Check out the ruined railway bridge, and get lost in the maze of rooms inside the huge factory buildings. Tour the abandoned local neighborhood.

T.M. Sinclair and Co was a meatpacking plant that moved to this 16 acre location in the 1870's it has undergone many changes in ownership to finally be fully abandoned in 1990. Reacquired in 1993, some buildings on-site were demolished, however many remained and were actively utilized. The site was purchased by the city of Cedar Rapids in 2007 with the purpose of using it for a Brownfields initiative. Numerous businesses were given leases to work inside the complex through 2007 and early 2008. The historic 500 year flooding in June of 2008 destroyed much of the plans for re-development. Since then, the complex has sat entirely vacant, and areas of it are slated for demolition.

There are some buildings being torn down rather slowly. The city wanted to build a water park on the lot but the state denied the funding and gave it to Dubuque for some riverfront project.
Update 09 March 2008 - The City has demolished most structures on the property and is planning to build a park there. They are not yet sure if they will demolish the iconic smoke stack that has been a part of the cities skyline since the city first got started.
Update May 2009, by mrvander - Cedar Rapids underwent devastating flooding in summer of 2008, and as the plant sits directly next to the river, the whole complex was hit really hard. It appears the city has abandoned plans to use the area and all the businesses that were slated or beginning to open there have re-located. Signs on the front gate indicate the area is unsafe and "designated for demolition," although the signs have been up for a good three-quarters of the year with little to no progress. There is a bulldozer on site stored in an otherwise abandoned building, but it looks little used. There are still probably 8-10 buildings standing including the original massive factory complexes. This is still a gigantic area with tons of buildings and things to see. My guess is it's on the city's long list of things to demolish after the floods, but given the sheer number of abandoned properties and areas in the city due to the floods I don't think it's imminent. The iconic smokestack still stands, and while most of the buildings are in disrepair, as I said before there is still TONS to see, and even more than there might've been before, after the flood (like the overgrown remains of a half washed out railroad bridge). The place appears to be entirely abandoned, the front entrance is barricaded off and I've yet to see anyone down there.

Update: mid-July of 09:
Bulldozer has been removed from the site without any demolition. Site has been minimally cleaned up in some areas, possibly by squatters. Squatters suggested (also possibly scavengers or scrappers) due to forced entry to old truck left on lot, the belongings in which were scattered about. No life except for a man riding his bike in the concrete area around the complex. Neighborhood around site remains abandoned and awaiting demolition after flooding except for the Cargill plant, which is extremely active.

UPDATE: Dec 2009
It appears a fire has ripped through the largest building quite recently. Was there the last weekend of November and actually run into some areas that were still smoking. Tread with care in the largest building as the fire has likely only compounded the structural damage to the building begun by the flood.
Keep your eyes open for copper scavengers, too. We ran into a guy throwing copper wire out of the windows of one of the smaller buildings near the old official front entrance.

UPDATE: early Jan 2010
Demolition slated for sometime in 2010, the city Council voted for it to be "fastracked" in 45 to 60 days, as of Christmas. See it soon, it's all coming down. Demolition, is this time, is imminent.
UPDATE: Jan 2019
All but one building has been demolished, the remaining building caught fire last year and was subsequently destroyed.
