In its prime, Bamberton was both an industrial facility as well as a company town with its own school, store, offices and other facilities. The industrial component of the site has remained as a cement distribution facility up to the present. Around 1990, plans were drawn up to build an ecologically sustainable, self-sufficient community for up to 12,000 residents. Rezoning difficulties stalled the process and in 1997 the project was abandoned.
