Although the remaining abandoned buildings have been sealed up rather tightly, the hospitals cemeteries are worth the trip alone. There are three cemeteries on the grounds. The first/oldest cemetery has tombstones with numbers on them(no names on the tombstones). In total there are 4,124 graves located at Peoria State Hospital.

Peoria State Hospital has been abandoned since the mid-seventies when the state deemed the facility “out of date”. Many of the cottages and other buildings were torn down in the 1980's. Those buildings that remain are being used by small businesses such as candy and soda vendors. One building has been turned into a bar/dance club. Only three buildings remain abandoned at this point: the main administration building (a.k.a. Bowen Building), Kitchen House/Dining Hall, Power Plant.
