     History
Norview High School was built by Norfolk County in 1954, it cost $2,793,000 to build.
Norview became Norfolk's fourth high school in 1955.

    Information from the NPS Operations:

During March 1999, work began on developing the educational specifications to guide building improvements at the school. Faculty, community members, and central office personnel met to begin discussions on the educational program desired for the future at Norview. In April, KBD Planning Group, Inc. was contracted to assist the school division in developing the educational specifications, thus giving input from a more global perspective. Representatives from KBD began their visits in May 1999, meeting with staff members and interested community members. A final educational specifications document was completed and presented to the School Board in November 1999.

December 2000 Update: During the past year, an architectural and engineering team from Waller, Todd, and Sadler conducted a feasibility study on Norview High School. The charge to the architects was to investigate and develop block plans, schematic floor plans, and a detailed cost estimate on both a renovation/addition scheme for the existing Norview and a replacement facility on the same site.

Information on the results of this study can be found by accessing the Norfolk Public Schools Feasibility Study Home page.

Copies of the full feasibility study can be reviewed in the school's media center or at the Barron F. Black Branch Library.

January 2001 Update: At the December meeting of the School Board, members decided to move forward with the construction of a new facility to replace the existing Norview High School. The new Norview is proposed to be located on the same site, but will face Chesapeake Boulevard at the approximate location of the existing football/track stadium. A new football/track stadium will be built close to the intersection of Middleton Place and Sewells Point Road as indicated on the site plans located on the Norfolk Public Schools Feasibility Study web page.

Members of the School Board also voted to proceed immediately with the release of the Request for Proposals for architectural and engineering design leading to final construction documents for Norview. It is anticipated that the Request for Proposals will be released in early to mid February with the selection of a firm to complete the design work finalized by March. It will take approximately twelve months to complete the design phase of the project.

July 2002 Update: Design work on the new Norview High School was completed in spring 2002 and the construction documents were put out for bids. Bids were opened in May with the contractor, Beers Skanska being the successful bidder. The cost of construction only for the new facility is $30,821,122. Site work began in earnest once school ended in June with the demolition of the existing stadium and the building of a temporary parking lot. Contractors will work for approximately 27 months on the project; the expected opening of the new facility for students and staff is September 2004.

A model of the new Norview High School is on display in the school's media center.

November 2002 Update: Since the contractors began work in June, many changes have taken place on the site. The stadium was demolished and work began on the foundation of the new school facility which will face Chesapeake Boulevard in the general area of the old stadium. Once the new building is completed and occupied, the old building will be demolished and a new stadium will be built close to the intersection of Middleton Place and Sewells Point Road. In addition to the site work for the building, a new road has been started off of Sewells Point Road at the present recreation center. This road will be used by the contractors during construction and will act as the service road to the new school. Also, a temporary parking lot for staff and students has been placed behind the present school close to Sewells Point Road. Erection of the steel for the new school will continue this month.

March 2003 Update: The contractors have been working busily on erecting steel and pouring concrete for the new school during the past several months. Although plagued by rain, snow, and cold weather, the new Norview High School currently is approximately 25% complete. At this point in time, a majority of the steel has been erected, most footings have been poured, and 40% of the ground floor concrete slabs have been poured. The project is approximately one month behind schedule due to prolonged cold and wet weather. The contractor has added additional workers and hours to the project in order to make up for lost time. There is every assurance that the project will be delivered on time.

July 2003 Update: Work continues on the new Norview High School. Although plagued by rainy and cold weather throughout the winter and early spring, the contractors are confident that they can make up for lost time and still anticipate completing the project on schedule. The project is over 40% complete at this time. Work on the interior includes continuing with masonry walls with the work on the drywall recently begun. The "rough-ins" on the electrical and plumbing continue. On the exterior, the brickwork is ongoing, work has begun on roofing, and the windows are being installed.

Sitework, especially on the stormwater pond beside the existing recreation center, will be completed as soon as the weather allows. Road paving will begin in front of the building with paving of the staff parking lot soon to follow.
