 Overview
 Description
We only saw Mt. Airy Lodge and the Pocono Palace - they're both right there when you're driving down the street. Mt. Airy is huge, the Palace not so much. Golfers are standing basically in the front yard putting. It's got a weird active/totally dead feel to it. No one seemed to mind that the backdrop for the beautiful (and expensive) course is a boarded up hotel. There are a lot of smaller buidlings on the property.

ADDITION- May of the boarded up "homes" around Mt. Airy where actully staff housing. Some have since been sold but may are still falling to peices near the lodge.

It's a good place for wusses since it's not too extreme - or anyone who remembers that damn commercial. The interesting features will most likely be inside, which is yet to be seen...

EDIT: It's been seen - and it's pretty interesting...

     History
The Poconos are for lovers only, right??
The only history I know is from the old commercial - "all you have to bring, is your love of everything"
Mt. Airy Resorts owns Mt. Airy Lodge, Strickland Mountain Inn and Pocono Gardens since the 60's or so, it went bankrupt about 3 years ago. There is still an active golfcourse, which is why the main picture looks sort of like a nice place to stay.

    EDIT:
In 2001 the original and only owner of the property killed himself. Leaving the entirety of the resorts fate in uncertain hands. The fact that he was $48 million in debt didn't help the resort staying open by any means either.

ADDITION- Mount Airy Lodge was one of the three lodges in this general area. The other two where the Pocono Palace and Stricklands Mount Resort. They all share the same property as Mt. Airy. The company currently owning this is trying to sell off both Pocono Palace and Stricklands but plan to keep the Mt. Airy property. The Golf corse remains open however and is the only thing currently keeping the property alive, rumor has gone around however in the Pocono area that possible demolition may eventully happen to the buildings.

I guess this was a last ditch effort - search google for some stuff, nothing too exciting. A lot of old hotel ads with teeny-tiny pictures

     Future Plans
Since it's so well protected, we imagine they are hoping it will reopen. It appears as though the furniture and curtains are still in all the rooms, and what you can see looks pristene (for an abandoned buidling)

    ADDITION- 7/28

During last year I spoke with the owners- which is a casino company out of Las Vegas. NV (*Sometime* Tree was the name). The woman there didn't seem to mind talking about the Mt. Airy property. From what she told me they where thinking of selling but mainly waiting until the state of PA passed gambling into effect, then they planned to open it as a full-time Casino Resort.

    Update:

The DeNaples (Scranton Pa) purchased the property for 25.1 million.

    Update:

The hotel has been emptied and it's contents have been sold at auction. Pocono Gardens is demolished, and the rest of the place is marked with "E off" everywhere, indicating the impending destruction of most of the property.

Update: The Casino will be built, plans are underway
