The theater had a continuous run from 1966 when it opened until the last show in 1998 when it closed after the passing of Mr. Smith. Mr. Harold Smith was a passionate film collector and a hands on owner with the day-to-day operation of the theater. He was an avid collector of classic Westerns, and had a huge collection of cinema memorabilia in his home office in Newport. The walls of his office and 16mm home theater were covered with signed autographed photos of movie stars of the great westerns such as Roy Rogers & Trigger, the Lone Ranger and etc. The original projectionist (known as Heavy) is probably in his late 70's or early 80's, and during his employment as the projectionist - used to live on-site inside the projection booth. He was a nice older gentleman, and knows every nut, bolt and screw of the entire place. The second and last projectionist Tommy is probably in his mid-40's and worked for Mr. Smith right up until the theater closed in 1998 at the time of Mr. Smiths passing. In 2000 the projectors, lamphouses, platter, sound systems, radio transmitters and remaining equipment were sold are now in use at an operational theatre in Nashville. The Woodzo Drive-In in Newport had their concession stand microphone wired into the movie's speakers. While movies were playing, a voice whould crackle over the window-mounted speaker in a low, nasal Southern drawl: "Your pizza's ready." You could either use a window speaker or tune in the audio on the car radio.

I hope someone re-opens this place, but I doubt it will happen. 4.13.2023 - The current owners, Junior and Gayla Hommel of Hommel Excavating have been clearing the property of overgrowth, making the screen and old buildings more visible. Junior Hommel said he is not sure what he will do with the 6.8-acre property at this time. See media coverage link to full 2.11.2023 article.
