This building was the main boiler plant for the train station, so there is probably steam tunnels somewhere as well as the passenger tunnel. Two stories of boilers, pipes and pumps wait those intersted machinery all in glorious technicolor. The pipes to each boiler are different colours for easier tracing.

There is a long pedestrian tunnel that runs from the back of the building to the passenger concourse at the train station. This could have been used for high profile pasengers to aviod the paparazzi in the terminal, or just as access for people working in the freight terminals on this side of the track, you deside. It is paralleled with a steam tunnel heading over to the train station.

This building and the one to the east (with the microwave tower) were built by the NCC as part of the Ottawa Station complex. The plant supplied steam to the station platforms for the purpose of heating trains parked in the station. Around 1992 VIA retired the last of the steam heated cars, built in the 40's and 50's when steam engines originally hauled them. Diesel locomotives were equipped with steam generators to provide heat, while the platforms provided steam when the trains were parked. With steam heat obsolete, the plant was shut down. In 1966 prior to the opening of the station, a summer student working in the tunnels was scalded to death by a ruptured steam pipe.

The building is to be demolished and replaced with an office tower, while the tunnel is to be refurbished as a pedestrian link to the station. It is unclear if this will be a public tunnel, and it is also unclear how it will be used as it leads directly into the passenger tunnel under the station platforms, which is normally off limits to those not getting on or off the train.
