     Interesting Features
Interesting for its incredible size (63 acres, 929,000 sq ft indoors). Almost a kilometer in length. Essentially your typical full-size mall that has become completely abandoned. Some light graffiti, but for the most part stands untouched as a monument to a massive commercial failure. The Mall was gradually abandoned from 1995-2004, from the south end on up. It was fun to explore this mall in 2004, as a stroll from north to south was like walking along a timeline of abandonment.

Takes a tremendous amount of time to explore the whole thing due to its size. Especially if you want to check out every little store.

Reminiscent of the "Blues Brothers" abandoned mall.

  • part-time guard
  • locked gates
  • wooden boarding
  • active security, but the firm is "Colorado Security Services Inc.", whose incompetence is legendary

     History
A fascinating, large shopping mall that was located on 63 acres right in the center of Boulder, Colorado. Initially opened in 1963, Crossroads was very successful and developers pushed heavily for expansion. There was much public opposition and several lawsuits opposing the mall's expansion, but during 1981-1983 a large expansion project was undertaken. In 1983 the expanded mall opened with familiar mall stores: JC Penney, Mervyn's, May D&F (Foley's), Montgomery Ward, etc.

1997: The beginning of the end. Several stores go out of business, followed by Montgomery Ward (anchor store on the south end). The entire south tip of the mall becomes abandoned, mall vacancy rate hits 20 percent.

1998-1999: Much discussion of redevelopment. A renovation project commences in 1999 with the symbolic tearing down of a wall (right on the southwest corner of the mall), but the renovation is put on hold and Macerich tries to sell the mall. The missing wall was very noticeable from the outside, and stayed there until the mall's complete demolition in 2004. It was rather bizarre driving by and seeing a mall with a missing wall for so many years.

2000: Flatirons Crossing mall opens in Broomfield, driving the final nail into Crossroads' coffin. Vacancy rate exceeds 50% During this period it was used as a police training area for the Boulder police, and explorers would later find things like shell casings and used flashbangs.

2003: Macerich comes up with plan to redevelop entire site, demolishing the mall nearly in its entirety.

February 2004: Mall closes. Completely empty except for Foley's on the North end. The rest of the mall is boarded off. Redevelopment plans are finalized, and demolition started late 2004, completed early 2005. Construction of a new mixed-use retail area known as "29th Street" is underway.

2005: This mall is gone. The plans for 29th Street move forward and the mall was completely torn down except for Foleys and the old Sears building.
