During the 1970s and early 1980s, "anybody who was anybody in retail back then was in Landover Mall," said Denzil Poore, a former manager of Kinney Shoes who worked at the mall for more than 25 years. "It was a nationally known center." The decline began when Garfinkel's and Woodie's filed for bankruptcy and closed. It became harder to attract other national chains and, combined with several high-profile crimes at or near the mall in the late 1980s and early 1990s, stores started to close or were replaced by lower-quality shops. Hecht's moved out in February after opening a store in the county's new mall in Bowie.
