This tunnel at it's entrance is about 5 to 7 meters tall, with stunning granite stonework. The floor of the tunnel is made up of muddy wooden ties that are uneven and rotting. The ceiling of the tunnel is stone, though half way through, support cribbing has been put in place to help support the tunnel. A short way past the cribbing, the tunnel becomes flooded all the way to the east end, were there is a fence across the opening.

This tunnel was built under the 3rd canal for the Great Western Railway as they did not want a swing bridge to cross the canal. This was the Hamilton - Niagara Falls line that is now CN's Grimsby Sub. The canal opened in 1885 and the tunnel was in use then. I can't find the date when they started using the bridge over the 3rd canal (Iron Bridge) but have found a reference that the bridge was in use in 1900. By this time it was the Grand Trunk Railway.

This tunnel will likely not be collapsed because of the haulage roadway overtop.
