| RCP stands for Reinforced Concrete Pipe; a prefabricated concrete tube with reinforcing steel cables (rebar) cast into the cylinder walls for extra strength and rigidity against erosion and changing pressures of the earth in which it is buried. Concrete pipe (not reinforced) was first used in 1842 as part of a sewer in Mohawk, New York. Variations and improvements in concrete piping followed suit over the years; including pre-stressed concrete pipe in the 1930's, and steel cylinder pre-stressed concrete pipe in 1942. Source: http://www.metromontmaterials.com/cylinders.jsp [edit] One common misconception is that RCP stands for round concrete pipe. Many drainers use this definition to describe a round variety of RCP that is very common. The truth is that RCP comes in many different flavors. Modular tunnel sections can be categorized by the shape of their cross section: Box culvert (this one happens to be double-wide) Round
Mummy/Horseshoe
Egg/Oval
The RCP family also includes a lot of other prefabricated products. Manhole chambers, size adapters, caps, lids, tees, and modular outfalls are also common RCP accessories. See also RBP | Modify this entry | Remove this entry |
