A typical drainage scenario in St. Paul. The river is at the bottom of a steep valley, and a tunnel following the slope of the terrain would wear it's self out from the force of the flowing water. Instead, some form of controlled dropshaft is used to get the water from high to low. In this illustration, it is a helical dropshaft similar to those seen in the Kittsondale Helix Drains.
