This has always been one of my favorite places to visit. It's close enough to where I live that I can make a day trip out of it.

Man this place is disgusting. No picture of the beautiful hairy pile of poop? That mushroom fungus stuff is crazy. Any idea what it started out as?

^^ Word.

Dav: it's possible I passed up a hairy pile of poop without realizing it. Or perhaps sat in it. Hard to say.

The fungi I have no idea how it colonized that area underground. My dad suggested the spores may have actually come in with the lumber originally and sat until conditions were right. Otherwise they'd have to have been brought in by miners or explorers on accident.

I wish I had the 'key' for those locknuts, it would make the local mine easier to explore.

Making a key isn't all that complex. Sometimes you can also pound a socket of approximately the right size info the channel. The wheel lock pictured is a tough one... not only is it collared but it's also tapered.

I was thinking something along the lines of wiping it down good with some light oil, then taking a small brick of clay and making an impression.

Something like lost-wax method could work for making a key.

Was that lock device on the grates that are in the pipes? Or was it somewhere else in the mine? Looks like it's a very wet mine. Was there any snowfall up there yet?

Not that I would know, but you can get a set of locking lug nut removal sockets that are fluted to remove lug nuts that you lost the key to........ I use them all the time for lost put nuts and such.

This device was on the bars of the first adit you come to, on the way to the main mine.

The device is maybe 2" across or so, and as someone else pointed out, has tapered edges, so it's hard to grab onto with anything. I've considered taking a impression with a block of clay. Though a Victor-key would work just as well if not better.

And yes there was still snow (AND ICE!). The first 1/4 mile we were sliding all over the trail, couldn't hardly stand up straight without sliding around. People up at the parking area were laughing at us. On the way back I slipped on one of the scree-covered-with-snow-and-ice areas and managed to plant my left arm into the snow/ground to keep from sliding over the edge and down the mountain.

It really just depends how long it's been since the last storm.

That's exactly why the tool is designed with tapered flutes, so it can be pounded on and get a good bite.

Was looking at the pics again. Is pic #9 a bucket of leftover foam that they used to seal the adits??

Junkyard: while the inner surfaces of this device show "use" the outter surface is relatively free of, erm, "bite marks". =)
I think the tapering keeps people from trying to lock some pliers onto it.

Hoodrat: could be! It had a rather foul smelling odor reminiscent of paint. I had thought the same thing based on the rough similarity in color, except.. I'm not familiar with how large volumes of sealing foam are applied, and secondly, where those cans were left is a pretty stout walk inside the mine from where that entrance is.

Do components for massive quantities of sealant foam come in 5 gal buckets??

Perhaps the folks up north who are intimately familiar with the strange purple goo can help us out on this one =)

Most foam sealants expand to 20-50X their initial volume. That 5 gallon bucket could probably fill your entire living room.
