The Castle house, Atlanta

Built in 1910 by Ferdinand McMillan, this odd house finds itself nestled cozily between three skyscrapers in the busy Midtown district of Atlanta.

The most striking interior feature is the collection of large southern medallions gracing the corner of each of the large rooms. There are only two tiny bathrooms, one on each level. There is no obvious kitchen, nor is there infrastructure to support one, although there is a standalone sink and range in the attic. There are two sets of inadequate electrical wiring in the place: the original two-conductor cloth-covered wiring inside the ceilings and walls, still connected to the ancient bulb-fuse boxes on the top two stories; and newer 1970s+ era wiring run through unsightly (and unpainted) galvanized conduit in the hallways.

I especially like the "bookcase doors" hiding some storage space in one of the attic rooms. As a friend of mine put it: "It's very Scooby-Doo!"

What an awesome house, the medallions are odd! Great find.

I smoked Marlboro reds for 20 years, I don't need no stinkin respirator!

What a great house! Do you know any of the history of it? I am guessing it was used as office space at somepoint, since there is no kitchen. I certainly hope that it well be restored and preserved, it is a remarkable piece of architecture.

the pictures of the out side remind me of that story where the little house is in the city and all the big buildings move in around it.... I would love to live in a house like that, so old, so full of history.

I need to add a shout out to friend & fellow explorer nonfucious. She recommended that we check out the location, and actually is the one who worked out the POE.

That's her in the mirror in the 3rd-from-last photo.

Why thanks!!

In all honesty - I'm just using Photomatix 2.4. Occasionally I'll load the pics into PSP 8 or Photoshop for touchups / noise removal or to fix something silly (like not holding the camera level.)

None of this set are touched up at all, though. Just post-processed in Photomatix and resized/watermarked with the Imagemagick library on Linux. (I have a script that resizes, watermarks, and thumbnails my images in one swoop.)

I'm shooting with a Canon Rebel XT in JPG/fine mode. My usual lens is a Sigma 20-40mm f/2.8 Aspherical EX. I use AEB +/- 2 stops for the HDR shots.

In this set I forgot my tripod so they were mostly shot at ASA 400 and fairly low shutter speeds for handheld, hence the "soft focus" appearance. I have gotten better at doing multiple exposures for HDR w/o the tripod, whereas originally I wouldn't even attempt it.

I remember this house! I remember years ago dropping a friend off at work right next to it and seeing that house and immediatly was drooling and wanted to get a closer look.

Ive seen that and thanks for the warning. but Im actually very open to some constructive criticism.
If i am making such a obvious mistake as I made I want someone to let me know! I have been exploring for years but its only been in the last year or two that I have started photographing. And only this year that I have begun posting these shots for people other than myself to see.

So I ask of all of you out there, If I am fucking up let me know what I did so I can learn and change it.
