| | | I've not done any UE yet so I'm not packed for that kind of activity, but I'd like to know what the rest of you pack, and the type of packs you carry. Mostly I've just been exploring the industrio-river area on the westbank of the Mississippi river at New Orleans. I carry the following things in an Ebags "slingshot cross-body" sling: 2 litres of water 1 quart canteen & canteen cover hanging from side strap "L shaped" flashlight towel sweatshirt pair of gloves wet weather poncho a meal toilet paper pencil, sharpie, and notepad [last edit 3/29/2005 5:01 AM by R.S. | | | Well welcome to the board. This question gets asked about every two weeks. I'll give you some of my own suggestions as others probably will. If you can get a better light. Those things break all the freaking time. I know no one in the infantry likes those things. Toilet paper is something I always forget and wish I had with me. You dont need canteens, water bottles work better and usually make less noise if carried properly. Although a canteen is great. A full meal (unless staying out all day) isnt to necessary. However I will say that some form of crackers, small snack, or power bars are great. I had a friend recently go kayaking (exploring) and he got very ill due to lack of food. He drank so much water his electrolytes went nuts and he threw up water most of the last part of the trip. Although this hasnt happened to me its a good idea to have a little something. Gatorade is useful for this as well. All water can kill you or make you ill. Also friend went home and ate something and wanted to go back out. Gloves are great. I carry two just incase a friend comes. The wet weather poncho is a great item as well. I dont mind getting soaked but its very useful. Id suggest cell phone if you can get one. Also if your going by yourself get yourself a wissel. Also a decent pocket knife or leatherman, just incase your get caught up in something, need to cut clothing for a makeshift bandage etc. If your really safety concious you could use it as a weapon, but thats not always the brightest move. I have one just incase. Better to have it and not need it then need it and not have it. At least in the knife department. Dont carry to much its usually not worth it.

| | | If you're doing tunnels or sewers solo (I can't really tell from your post), at the very least invest in a $3 whistle from a hardware store, preferrably spend $15 and get one of those "personal body alarm" things they sell women on paranoia about getting raped in the parking lot. You break your legs in a bad fall, you don't want to starve to death in the tunnels under the street just because you can't get yourself out.

| | | "Hmm, there's a faint whistling noise coming from that manhole, must be the rare Albino Whistling Gator! I wouldn't rely on someone hearing and interpreting a whistle over traffic noise, out of a deep shaft, in a sewer or tunnel. If I'm exploring alone I find it much more reliable to tell a friend where I'll be and to send help if I don't get back in a reasonable time.

| | | the suggestions above are great. you should maybe consider carrying an extra flashlight too. I carry my maglight as a main light and put my headlamp and extra batteries for both in my camera bag. An extra bulb for each is also a good idea but not needed. Its not to much extra weight and you never know when your flashlight might die, it happens.

| | | Actually, I do carry a cell phone, I just neglected to mention it because I'm not really a fan of digital devices ;). I usually prefer to forget about it. I don't much care for the flashlight I have, but I have it left over from, coincidentally, my infantry service. It's never broken on me, but damned if it doesn't feel fragile. Also, I'm not really into the UE thing yet, so I haven't been in any sewers or abandoned buildings or anything. I'm mostly just wandering around the industrial district on the new orleans westbank. Thanks for the suggestions, pals. I didn't know this kind of thread popped up all the time, I went through couple pages in the backlog and didn't see one. Oh well . | | | I normally carry around a flashlight and a pocket knife on my belt, but when i'm out exploring i normally have, 2 pairs of gloves (mechanics gloves, and latex), head lamp, camel back, very small first aid kit (few bandaids, some gauze, a hanky, lighter), and my camera. I don't normally go underground and typically my truck isn't that far away, so i keep a change of clothes, and a few MREs in the back just in case.

| | | I don't carry much.. In a small messenger-bag (I keep meaning to get a backpack because this thing kills the shoulders after a while) - extra batteries for flashlights - mini-mag - handful of kleenex or toilet paper - latex gloves and leather gloves - bottle of water (sometimes) - cell phone - aspirin In my pockets: - $5 in singles - student id - drivers license - more kleenex - 4d mag-lite (fits in my coat pocket nicely) I also have a small camera bag that attatches to my belt and I keep my camera, extra camera batteries and memory cards in. I just carry around my tripod since I'm using it every 5 seconds and it doesn't fit in anything. What I keep meaning to get: - hand sanitizer - backpack
