| | | serious? most asbestos masks aren't rated for gasses ... must be a big bulky crazy mofo ... I have two asbestos masks, a small portable one for minor contaminated areas (white asbestos that I don't beleive is airborne) and then a hardcore full mask battery operated mofo that you wear when you're also wearing a suit, this is normally for exploring locations where asbestos removals are in progress and the asbestos is more than likely airborne ... If you think that the asbestos is going to be airborne spend a few bucks on a box of asbestos suits, they don't cost much and yo can throw them out after exploring and not have to throw your clothes out Question though - does anyone know if asbestos can effect you through cuts on your skin? This is a bit of a worry for me as I'm always covered in cuts etc ... I'm assuming the luing problem is because instead of growing out your lungs consume the asbestos making the cancer .. .whereas skin the asbestos can grow out with the skin ... does anyone have facts on this?

Umm... if you have the right canister. There's no guarantee that it'll protect you from asbestos unless it's rated for it, though. Plus, full-face masks are really annoying, so unless you really need that sort of protection (in which case, you probably need to bring your own air supply as well...) then it's more of a liability than anything.

It can cause "asbestos warts" on the skin, but these are benign. The reason it causes mesothelioma is that the fibers become embedded in the lungs, irritate the tissue, and over time cancer develops. Obviously this is an extremely simplified explanation, so for your edification, here's a couple articles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asbestos http://en.wikipedi.../wiki/Mesothelioma

Most older mil spec gas masks arew not rated p-100, newer ones are, such as the canadian full face, and the only canaster that fits, to be able to use in places like middle east, they must be p-100,.( the canadian one also has a cool drinking straw incorperated into it,you just need a special canteen lid).Just look inside for the hepa pre-filter, it will be a couragated filter before the charcoal part, and is always p-100 because nato standards do not use n-95. this will only be for NATO countries such as the U.k., Canada, and the U.S. But of course, with surplus, and not being niosh approved, buyer be-ware. ( I would never use surplus, only civilian, and niosh, brand new being the main reason)
I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too! |

You can get a 60mm to 40mm adapter and use standard nato filters on the canadian mask. The drinking straw is really handy. I have a sparwe bottle around here somewhere. Unfortuantely no mask to go with it. They always seem to get confiscated. Fuckin' po.

Just search ebay or military surplus stores (online). Shouldn't be more than a few bucks. There are also adapters for the drinking straws so you can use the more common US cantine.

In exploring old buildings, you shoiuld have a mask regardless. They'll protect you from most of the stuff you dont want in your lungs including asbestos. Think of it as an investment. Its not a new thread, either. someone dug it up from ye olde times.
