Well, that rock has been pretty solid though. That's why it's structured in the catacombs like a maze, there's still enough rock overhead so that it creates "structure" so things don't fall in immediately. Sounds like they've been flooding a lot in recent years, from what he's said, yeah. I'm sure in some places the local geology wouldn't allow for that. I'm not familiar with Moscow, but yeah it'd be nice if more cities had that kinda stuff under them

The Paris catacombs have a history of collapse, that's what led to their current layout. Originally Paris underground was mostly room-and-pillar limestone quarries. Then as the city built up more and more on top, they started to cave in. The quarries were backfilled, leaving "inspection galleries" to make sure no more collapse was happening. The inspection tunnels are what make up the present day Paris catacombs.
