Chernobyl by Motorcycle - No, not that chick...

This may be old news here, but I found this article about a guy who rode a motorcycle over back roads into the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone last fall, camped there for several days, explored until he got lost, and was eventually "caught & expelled".

http://www.majirox...ng-into-chernobyl/

Of course we're all familiar with the Exclusion Zone by now; we've all seen pictures taken from the guided tours, including the ones that that girl (Elena?) tried to pass off as being from her "private rides into the zone". So I post this link not because this guys pictures are special; they're not. I post it simply because I've been completely compelled with the idea of doing exactly this sort of thing myself one day, and am wondering if there is anyone on this forum that has knowledge they could share regarding what the viability of such an idea is, and what sort of security and safety concerns (other than radiation) one might encounter.

Of course there are the two checkpoints that would have to be bypassed, but what of the area within the zone itself? For example, the Moscow Eye, out in the woods about 5 miles south of Pripyat...one can pretty easily plot a path to ride to it on back roads/dirt roads, and even then a path on to Pripyat. But the article states there are "Three thousand police and workers including scientists doing research are employed within the zone." That seems like a remarkably high concentration of people to avoid for very long, especially if most of them are police who are patrolling the area for intruders.

On the surface, it seems like if you can plan a route and make it into Pripyat, you could setup camp in one one the myriad generic apartments for 3 or 4 days and operate from there. But could it really be that easy? Radiation concerns would obviously be paramount, but even beyond that, could you actually move around within the town of Pripyat or the zone in general on a bicycle or motorcycle without considerable risk of being caught? It sounds as though all they do is throw you out if you DO get caught, but as an American, it would be a very long and disappointing ride home to go all the way to the Ukraine only to be expelled and sent away with nothing to show for your time and expense.

So if anyone can shed some light on what the situation is with regards to security, and what/where within the zone (besides the town of Chernobyl itself) are there active locations with people living or working, it would be most appreciated...

...and thanks for indulging me.

Well clearly it's possible if people have done it. The risk and evasion would be more fun than the location. Take a month off and make it a short part of a longer trip. If you're ejected from Ukraine, just get a flight back through Belgium (seems to be one of the prime countries in EU) and explore Belgium.
