Slip-Proof Shoes?
< on 6/3/2004 8:53 AM >

What are the most slip proof shoes? A lot of places I explore are very dusty or wet or both, and I don't know what the safest shoe to use in that situation would be.

I'm more worried on slipping on steep or uneven surfaces than getting my feet wet.

So what kind of shoe should I get? What is the ultimate in non-slip shoes?

Golf cleats.....seriously though a lot of safety boots these days use composite materials in the sole that actually get sticky when they're wet instead of slippery. I know my kodiaks do. Your best bet's to just go to a place that sells safety boots and ask a clerk what they have in stock like that

You could always go with rock climbing shoes. Those things are rediculously sticky on the bottom. They would suck to walk around in tho....

Rock climbing shoes are actually not sticky at all. They are rather soft, so that porus material (like rock) can dig into them. They are very uncomfortable to wear for long periods of time and are not designed to be walked around in (they will wear out very quickly).

I would recommend some good hiking boots with soft and very aggressively textured soles if you want good grip on varied surfaces.

Nothing is ever Slip Proof. IT all dependens on what your steping on. Deck shoes for boats and docks wont slip on boats but I have noticed slipping on mossy covered rocks under water flow. Mockasins (SP) the indians wore are pretty good for not slipping especially on marbles ball bearings etc. My GSG9's are pretty damn good. They are designed to grip in all directions no matter where you put your weight and have a cleet style sole. The downside is they attract firm mud and if you dont kick this off it will cause you to slip on slippery stuff easier.

Moral of the story nothing is slip proof. Go with a good all around. My suggestion is a GSG9 if your willing to pour out the cash. If not try combat boot or a softer soled shoe.

So what are the up sides and down sides of the various kinds of non slip shoes?

Cleeted shoes?
Moccasins?
Sticky shoes?
Shoes with specially designed tread?
What else is there?

Basicly you named the basic groups.

Cleets - depends on your cleets if you get GSG9 which are just rubber sole you have good traction basicly in any condition. Not that this is not like the cleets you get for sports these are tons and tons of cleets and they are soft. They do wear down. There are several shoes out there with similar soles.

Mocisans/Tabi - Basicly you can feel what your feet are touching straight through the sole of the shoe. This allows your bodys weight to shift and compinsate very easily. However the soles are thin and dont always protect from glass etc.

Soft sole shoes - Thes guys stick to nearly any surface. The downsides are the sole wears away first. Also these soles are usually flat and dont provide the traction on loose dirt sand, and especially oily surfaces.

I cant think of anything else but Im sure someone else will post more info.

combat boots can be good, too, given that you follow a few guidelines:

they suck for climbing, can't get the toe in anything.

Army Surplus - $40 boots? you get what you pay for - companies like National Protective Services and even Docs put way more $ into making quality footware... don't go with a cheap option.

wear - once the tread wears down on these, they have the approxamate traction of vans - they are smooth to a fault.

come to think of it, the same basic guidelines would work for hiking boots as well. i use both, depending on the situation, and i have never had a particular problem with slipping (anymore than is usual for my clumsy ass).

I might also add to Burzum's post that not all combat boot soles are the same. Play around with them in the store before purchasing.

i reiterate my suggestion of Wolverines.

i am the back door clerk at work. on the dock, the dock plate is made of diamond steel. it angles up and a lip folds out (all done manually) and then angles back down, so we can offload pallets (or skids) from the trailer that's backed up. since it angles up, someone, usually me, has to stand on top of it to get it back down. it gets wet when it rains even though it's an enclosed dock, so of course, it gets slick.

recently, when it was wet, i walked up the plate and made it just fine in my wolverines but the truck driver kept slipping back down cause he was wearing some old tennis shoes. he even remarked about my traction abilites and wanted to know what i was wearing.

Wolverines. Thumbs up. All the way.

I never knew that... Haven't been rock climbing in a while though. Never knew they were soft, not sticky. I do remember that they sucked to stand around in though...

I wear a pair of FiveTen approach shoes for exploring. They combine the sole material of a climbing shoe with a more comfortable upper, and the soles wear well. You might want to give them a look

Hiking or work boots are probably your best bet. Work boots can be heavy, but if you choose that route look for slip or oil resistant boots. I have Caterpillar boots and they are not bad for slippery situations. Another option is to look at fishing boots. They are basically hiking boots with felt on the soles. The felt helps the fisher not slip on slippery rock. However I believe the felt soles need to be replaced fairly often.

i've used their amphibious shoes for hiking down rivers, canyoning, etc

good stuff... never tried their climbing and trail gear, but i would assume it would be of high quality as well.
