| | Speedlight question < on 11/17/2011 8:10 PM >
| | | Hey, I'm looking for a new Speedlight. I currently use a Nikon SB-400 for my D3100. I would like something brighter and more powerful but would ideally like to stay under $500.00. Any recommendations?

| | | The 900 is on point but has serious overheating problems. Check out either a 600 or 800. Do you need it to command other strobes? If so then go with the 800, it supports Nikon's commander mode similar to the SU-4. Plus what's sweet about the 800 is you can get the extra battery add-on which supports a 5th AA battery for faster recycle times. Pretty sweet!

thanks for the info about over heating. The extra battery add on would be very helpful.

| | | Looks like Pro-masters copy of the Sunpack 4000af, which you can get now for just over 100.00, or used for under 70.00. I use the Sunpac 4000 af, and it works great. I even have mine set up for Flash Gels, and softbox.

I have decided to get the PROMASTER 7500EDF. Looks like it has everything I want. With it being so cheap I can by a fisheye lens much sooner which is a plus.
I do have another question. This one is about filters. I have been looking at a macro lens and saw a macro filter. Is there a big difference between the two?

| | | YES! I too had the same question and took the eBay adventure and purchased a wide angle filter that came with the macro filter. It works to a degree. It does the job but you lose a great deal of sharpness around the edges. For macro, go with a reversing ring or extension tubes (fits between your camera and lens to extend the focal point). The tubes work best but you lose light and will need a flash, the reversing ring you don't, but you lose a little control over how much magnification you want. That's the lesser expensive option, if you have the money go with the lens. I don't, so I'm looking to pick up some tubes here soon. Oh and by the way with some of the better tubes they will have contacts to extend the electronics of your lens so you will still have metering and auto focus. | | | A note on the overheating of the 900... The 910 was released this week and in its design they borrowed the cooling system of the 700 to solve the overheating issue. They also added a new design to the LcD menu. Could be worth the money.
