| | | lol not a bad idea, i don't usually wear my respirator either, especially during summer heat. But i never go exploring without it just in case, better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it right?

| | | They use a lot of energy, take up valuable space, and if the place is really that bad, you need a full decontamination of all clothes and article on exiting. They are a feel good thing for most. Don't lie to yourself. Avoid heavily contaminated areas or suit up and down the right way.

| | | Posted by Minervanerva I've been looking on some Canadian hardware sites, and the prices (with tax) end up $50+
|
Same, I figured I might try ebay. That one looks pretty decent.

Those actually look decent, though I imagine the durability is worse than filters with plastic enclosures like the ones I linked to. If they were to get ruined easily in a backpack, or while crawling/climbing, the cost/benefit ratio wouldn't be worth it. Maybe the enclosed filters could be bought separately and still fit the mask? Also, it says Medium; does that mean a Large size is available? I have quite a big head/face :p

| | | Yeah I honestly have no idea about durability.. maybe someone else can answer that question. It appears that the seller does have a large version though.

| | | Before you invest money, you need to understand what you are trying to do. If you are heavily contaminated that respirator is only part of the solution. Enjoy your asbestos warts.

I used to paint in new buildings, and old ones. Breathing in saw dust and old shit was miserable; even with those paper 3m masks. I think a respirator would just make things more pleasant when exploring dusty/old spaces. I'd probably just keep it in my pack just in case. It's really not a big investment. The 3m 7500 model is made of silicone and extremely durable.

Don't fool yourself into thinking this alone will protect you you from heavy contaminated asbestos sites. Learn to recognize asbestos and leave it alone.

| | | Make sure the respirator is fitted properly as well. In industrial lab situations (and when i spray fungicides) I get fitted for my respirator. If air is getting in around the edges of your face, than the respirator is doing nothing for you. duct tape and some foam usually does the job if you dont get it professionally done.
That said i just have a particulate mask for scary mold, im too lazy for masks when exploring
It's not the smokes makin' me sick, It's standing out in the cold to smoke em' |

what he means is basically if you see large piles of off colored cotton candy, do not try to eat it, or dive in and swim around like you're in a ball pit however fun that may be

Reminds me of being a kid and seeing the large bales of pink insulation that had the pink panther on them. Sure didn't make me want to go and touch them any less.

Stop that. You're making it sound like fun. At some sites there have been some that have done just that. Silly rabbits.

No warts here! and lungs are still working perfectly well! people must also keep in mind, that asbestos, isnt always in "cotton candy" form... or on the ground. a large portion of the time, it is airborne and nearly invisible and undetected. same goes for mold spores, as for decontamination, after just crawling through buildings, I just through my clothes in the wash, and bingo, every trace of abandoned building is gone! its like magic! no need to dress up and down. as for a respirator, it is a very smart investment in my opinion... if you can feel the air moving into your lungs, and feel the dirt, you most deffinately want a respirator. I have encountered breathing complications, in some of the most open, and ventilated locations locally. and after the passing of a few family members, due to mesothelioma, I think I will keep my respirator on my face, and continue to enjoy the hobby

Yeah, just like to pros. *dusting self off after rolling on the ground from laughter* If you had done abatements you would know better. You CAN see it in the air along with other airborne particles, just shine a flashlight or laser through the air.
