Close one in the DTES

So i moved here a little while ago, started up a business and had a great idea on how to integrate myself into the DTES while helping those around me. (long story)
anyways i hooked up with this guy from the DTES facade restoration program and things were moving pretty quick. My business plans were approved over other candidates and i was shown a space. 58 East Hastings. i don't bat an eye, they know I'm committed. i get the word things are moving ahead and that during asbestos abatement i will get to meet with the planners to have input on the layout of the unit and design for the signage out front. Wicked. the orange plastic goes up in the windows AND!
just kind of stays there for a long time. no calls are received or returned.
back to dreaming of the next time i can try to get in on some crazy scheme in return for cheap rent in a prime location....

My thoughts exactly. Well played. The only thing missing is the piano.

What kind of business are you planning down there?

It Was going to be a used items store that only does business online and sells all items packaged and delivered. Basically I buy out the contents of peoples apartments/houses when they are leaving town and also surplus/abandoned items from moving companies. then i clean and reorganize the items into complete packages for people moving in who need everything. I always have a surplus of items i just cant find homes for so i pitched this idea of having a hotline for people getting off the streets to connect with the basics needed to be self sufficient. (kitchen items, cleaning products, things along those lines) Been doing it since i moved here, (out of storage lockers though) which gets pretty depressing after a while.

Nice, sounds like it has some possibilities.

Um....i dunno.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

No money invested thank goodness. I think the stall has something to do with the bottle depot taking longer than expected to move further east.

There were 5 years ago, now there are just empty lots. The Pantages demolition removed the last major abandonment in the DTES.

i know they removed/boarded up/fenced off alot of stuff because of the olympics, it was really sad actually.

what kind of building was it that they tore down 5 years ago?

its pretty messed up how they tried to "clean up" the DTES, by force/displacement, maybe if the city didnt ignore everyone there for so long, the neighborhood wouldent have turned out like it did. anyway a little off topic now, i would love to see some pictures of DTES explorations.

I figure SRO's will start to disappear, much like they did (are) doing on Granville st, pushing low income out. Commercial drive has also gone..er...commercial, with non affordable rents, gone to "gentrification".

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

are you talking about the SRO hotels?
a lot of those down there people wold rather live on the streets than live in the hotel rooms. i guess the conditions in some of them are pretty bad.
buildings falling apart, non-working sinks and toilets, leaking sinks and toilets, bedbugs everywhere.

i think the city should give them some grant money to refurbish the buildings. the owners should take the responsibility to actually care for the buildings that they are renting out.

i didnt know they had SRO's on granville street.

The hotels on Hastings are almost all owned by the Sahota family, notorious for refusing to perform maintenance and charging obscene rents. The city has taken them to court multiple times for building code violations, it shocks and amazes me me constantly that they have not simply seized the buildings and put them in the care of the Portland Hotel Society.

There used to be quite a few SRO hotels on Granville, they were demolished / refitted during the construction of the Canada Line in an attempt to clean up south Granville for the olympics.

As to my comment about 5 years ago, there used to be quite a few epic empty buildings along Hastings. Woodwards, the emtpy lot beside the Country Music Pub, the city block alongside the Pantages, etc etc etc. All gone now.

Actually, the Sahota's own the Regent, the Balmoral, the Cobalt and the Astoria a little further east. The Laudisio family own the Brandiz and a couple smaller ones on Powell.

The VAST MAJORITY of the remaining hotels are owned by City/Province and run by corporations of the poverty industry like the Portland Hotel Society. The actual Portland Hotel, by the way, is hideous and filthy inside and is teeming with bedbugs.

I've been inside almost every building down there. The poverty industry (Portland Hotel Society, St James Society, Atira Management etc etc) are no better than the Sahotas or the Laudisio's - they exist to make money, and balk whenever anyone brings up financial transparency with them. With hundreds of millions of dollars poured into that ghetto by all levels of Government every year all those groups that purport to "help those poor, marginalized people" sit eagerly at the trough waiting to feed.

they should regulate them more; its so sad they were left to decompose to their current state by any standards.

Looks like it was taken from the roof of the Washington Hotel.
