Radar Station (NL)

So on my way back home to Newfoundland for some vacation time the plane took a different path into the airport and I happened to see what looked like an old military fortification on the cliff just North of St. John's. I recognized some other buildings just west of this spot so once I landed I checked it out on Bing maps and figured out what roads to take to get there. After using my Google machine I found out this was actually another Pine Tree Line Radar Station, so after my last exploration of an old Radar Station in Nova Scotia(http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=94681) I knew I had to go check this one out as well.

A few of us set out yesterday to check it out, and somehow I have never heard of it before. The site is actually right on a section of the East Coast Trail (http://en.wikipedi...i/East_Coast_Trail) so there were not even any stay out, or trespassing signs that I noticed. Watch out though, it's commonly used for paintball games, but it looks like they move a sign out onto the trail if they do that so people are aware. This was a much larger complex than what is left at the one I visited in NS.

1. Outside what I would assume was the Radar Dome.

2. Inside

3. View from the roof.

4. adjacent Building

5. Some radio towers on the site now.

6. My new UER recruit. The hike and location was quite safe.

7. Some rooms from the adjacent building.

8. More..

9. again..

10. yup..

11. The largest room. The back wall is full of paintball shots.

12. Some Tags

13. Other side, from the roof.

14. End Wall

15. Now this was an interesting spot. It looked like nothing, but there is actually a hatch in the ground. It is the top of a very large underground tank. It was once used as a water tank when the site was operational.

16. Inside..

17. Random manhole in the woods. I am sure there is a good chance of being tunnels of some sort, but I could only see a few feet down because of rocks and other crap.

18. Another out building (a few minutes down the hill)

19. Random, but liked it.

20. The last building I visited. There was another road that lead out to another area where I believe there were even a few more buildings but I was running low on time. Or rather it was past baby nap time, so cranky as sin.

I thought to myself, hey! why don't I try to get all the ones on the east coast. But.. the one in Sydney and the one down past Shelburne are still occupied to some extent. The one down the eastern shore is just an unmanned relay station, and the one in Sydney, from what I read they are still trying to clean up the site so fences all around the property. They brought in a company to determine alternate uses for the building, then a few years ago they found old fuel tanks under the ground that were not discussed when the property was sold. So I think that is what they are at now.

Where is the one on the Eastern Shore?? The one at Barrington is on the South Shore. I've never heard of the one down east.

Just had to clarify. Because I'm from the Eastern Shore, and the most I've ever found military-related are the old bombing range in Grand Desert and a listening post in Chezzetcook. Aside from parks farther up towards Canso area.

I found some military buildings up in the woods in Shelburne this past weekend too. Still waiting for time to post from my camera. Barracks and some bunkers, but the bunkers were all bricked in.

I too have found some bunkers at Shelburne, but they're probably not the same ones you found. Go down near the production facility to find Government's Point Battery.
