Used to go to Alternative school there, for a few months. The bus rides were to long for me back then. The bus rides downtown were more appealing.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me, and it'll happen to you, too!

The plan for a revitalized Ioco that floated around recently is quite pleasant. I've contacted the Port Moody museum regarding renting one of the old bungalows at below-market rates in return for repair work, but they were sadly not amenable.

Probably because the Port Moody Museum doesn't own the land or buildings. Imperial Oil does.

They don't refine there anymore, but they still store & ship things in and out of there by train and tanker. Skeleton crew I would think.

The museum owns the houses in the townsite, Mowgli, I'm sure of it. Imperial gave them the townsite a few years back, hence the Port Moody heritage department signs up all over the remaining bungalows and the grocery.

The refinery itself is currently undergoing environmental remediation for the most part.

The refinery lands need remediation like you can't believe.

There is tar/oil oozing up out of the ground in multiple places, pools of sludge and junk open so when it rains they overflow all over the ground, and animals wander through that...

Imperial Oil owns the whole shebang. The houses are essentially worthless (from an economic perspective anyway). The reason you see the blue signs on the houses (did you ever notice the spelling mistakes on those signs by the way) is because the buildings, like many others in the City, are on Port Moody's heritage register.

Sun article from a few years ago:

http://www.canada....47b469b7ec&k=30421

Heritage Conservation guidelines from the City of Port Moody's website. It say's several times throughout that Imperial Oil owns the site:

http://www.cityofp...ationAreaGuide.pdf

Imperial is not exactly hurting for cash, so I don't think they're in too big of a hurry to develop their property. Like Jester referenced, there is a ton of mess to clean up around there. If they don't develop it, they don't really have to open that can of worms. In the mean time, the boarded up houses will continue to decay, and the last 2 residents will eventually die and their houses will be boarded up as well.

I was under the impression there was never any refining going on there, and that it was always a tank farm. I guess that was the later years, as I don't remember much of a refinery there as a kid growing up there in the 80's, only a tank farm. I think they had a very low refining capacity compared to shell, and chevron...both in Burnaby. I remember the shell rotating neon sign wayyyy back at that refinery. I remember one of the "S"'s being burnt out to!

According to some old-timers they refined a lot of specialty oil (fuel oil for ships, home heating and some odd stuff like asphalt & tar & gravel roofing ingredients. It was a busy refinery at one point, just not too much gasoline I'm guessing.

Heh, thanks for the clarification Mowgli, explains why I never got anywhere with my inquiries.

RE: Refinery - It was actually a massive oil refinery at one point, that's the whole reason Ioco was built in the first place. They started operations in 1914, but turned it into a tank farm in the 70's or 80's rather than spend the $$$ to upgrade the facility.

Was out walking my dog in the townsite today and noticed that they've put up blue temporary construction fencing around 2 of the houses on 3rd avenue. This is a new development within the last 2 days. There's a Hazco sign attached to the fence stipulating safety requirements, hard hats viz vests etc. I wonder what's up?
