| | | Not sure if anyone asked this before. Do any of you use service keys? Or.. do you recommend using them? These keys usually go into those holes in the control panel to stop elevator, turn fans/lights on/off, put elevator in service mode, etc. Found a few on ebay. One building was closed completely, but still had the power. I think it would be much easier to use the elevator to get to some floors. Plus, some times, certain floors are only accessible by elevator (staircase locked).

| | | I dont know if this goes for all elevators.. but a for the Dover elevator at my old Art Program, pretty much any key would turn things on/off. My house keys, even.

| | | Buy a set of keys to the handcuffs they'll put you in after you get caught with 'em.
Edit: actually let me retract that, you probably wont get into trouble, b/c they are legal just as long as you have explicit permission from the landlord or building owner...obviously if you use it to interfere with police/medical/fire you will be held liable...but I'm sure we're all smart enough to know never to do that...unless the cops are chasing you of course. | | | This would be used in one of those closed buildings with lights on. Obviously, I am not going to contact any landlords for permissions to use the keys while I am already entering the building without any permissions. ;). Also, these keys look more or less ordinary. I am not talking about the drop key that looks like a rod that is used to open the actual elevator doors.

| | | Ok, some info for Otis elevators
The keys are common to Otis elevators, different keys are for different things. I know UTF is universally a fire service key. UTA operates the ind. serv. UTE operates the stop/run, I also have a UTB and a UTG I think, they're probably for inspection mode or something. |

| | | I've come across some elevator service keys when I've been exploring, and they've always come in handy, especially for reaching those locked off floors you couldn't otherwise get to. The only thing that I've not liked about carrying them around, is that some of the newer Otis elevators take a huge amount of keys. I'll be walking around with rings of almost 30 keys just for a couple elevators...

| | | If the control panel hasn't locked it out, just carry a coathanger and climb on top, then drive the car where you're going. I've gotten a lucky 7 to fold to about palm length that works on most of 'em.

| | | This brings up an interesting question I've had for a while. I have noticed that some elevators have a key switch on the panel that is labeled "service mode" or "inspection mode" or something similar. I've never actually gotten the chance to explore an elevator shaft yet, but I know that the inspection controls are located on top of the car. So is this switch inside the car just a lockout for the drive controls up top? Or does it do something different?

| | | It's not too bad. The building I was talking about has been closed down btw ;). Drop key seems to solve many problems though. Good luck!

| | | I used to repair and maintain elevators. I worked with Kone-MacGregor and Shindler marine lifts, but the basics are the same on all of em. Common sense should apply, or you will probably die. Elevators are dangerous. that being said, they are also awesome. There are two types of keys for an elevator, override and maintenance keys. Override are the keys you use in the control panel in the car, that let you skip all the other floors. They are usually for emergency services. They are kinda boring, and harder to get a hold of, although the locks are not fantastic, and can be raked easily. Service keys are a whole other thing altogether. They are usually a triangularish tube about 6 inches long with a crossbar to turn em. They open the doors, either through a hole in the door, or a hole in the top of the doorframe. insert, twist and hold while opening the door. It's a lot easier to open the door if the car isn't there, although that will obviously lead to an open elevator shaft, so don't fall in. NEVER enter en elevator shaft without breaking the safety chain! That means the Emergency stop in the pit, on top of the car, or in the machinery room! Find em, use em. I recommend the one on top of the car, because that also gives you access to inspection mode, where you can drive the elevator manually at low speed. There's a switch to do this, then up and down buttons. Hit the E Stop BEFORE you go looking for the switch, then release it ONLY when you are in inspection mode! If the thing won't move in inspection mode, someone has shut it down or killed the power or something, but you don't know where or for how long, so hit an E Stop yourself. Oh, and be careful climbing the ladders in the shafts, never underestimate the climb, and know how to open the door to get out of the shaft again, there's a catch at the top of the door, you have to either lift or twist. Be careful though, those switches can be live! Basic rules of thumb with exploring elevators safely - 1 E Stops! 2 Go slow, take your time, avoid electrical things 3 Don't try and ride it unless you know how, and then watch where you are going and keep your hands and legs away from shit that's moving.

| | | This is very good information, neptix! * * * I would also not recommend riding any systems that require additional authorization methods in cab. Examples: some elevators have key card access to certain floors, and you may get locked "in" on the top floor as a security measure.

Thanks for the advice dude, seems most professionals just scream "Don't do it! It's dangerous!". It's really nice to get some basic solid advice to make things a bit safer.

| | | if the elevator is running... no keys required to open the outside door. a little string will suffice + a little knowhow. My old man, a retired elevator maintenance guy taught me that when I was a kid. I've been on a few freight elevators roof when they are running full speed. quite the ride, and keep all body parts you care about away from moving parts. Obviously, keep quiet if someone is in the elevator.

| | | There's a guy on youtube named elevatorguy or something like that, he uses them. I'm pretty sure my father used to have one somewhere from when he worked maintenance at a building. One type of key I'm pretty sure works for all elevators manufactured by that company. Anyways, the guy on youtube had videos of him getting stuck in elevators or purposely stopping them and fiddling with the key to get it working again. Pretty dumb. I forget how I even brought those videos up. You might be able to find them. EDIT, Not the guy I was talking about but here's a video explaining how they get the doors open, could be useful to someone, who knows. http://www.youtube...atch?v=2Hwjs82hBVc [last edit 4/7/2012 5:49 AM by vividdecay - edited 1 times]
